About The Michael Project

The Michael Project is a ministry of River of Life Church in Harare (Zimbabwe), and has been established as a result of the needs of children at risk in Zimbabwe. It is named after an orphan adopted in 1994, whose biological parents were Mozambican refugees and victims of HIV/ AIDS. Michael died in 1995.

The project is in the process of a transition of leadership, as founding leaders Dave and Helen Hobbs take up a more ambassadorial role.  Simba and Barbara Pfupajena now head a management team that draws on the gifting and experience of key individuals who have a passion for taking on the challenge of addressing the plight of children at risk.  That leadership team continues to rely on the invaluable support of the Eldership of River of Life Church.  Simba and Barbara are adoptive parents and come from internal auditing and administrative working backgrounds respectively.  They are both University of South Africa graduates, with Barbara holding a BA - Health Sciences and Social Services, and Simba holds a BCom - Internal Auditing.

Rephat Nyarenda, a Hatfield Bible College (Pretoria, South Africa) graduate is a key part of the management team is, having joined the Michael Project in 2006.  Beyond the pastoral oversight, Rephat also provides a vital link to essential Governmental Departments.  They, together with his wife Mavis, been foster parents, which they continue to do today.

Regina Chari completes the management team, to which, informed by her Masters in Social Work (Washington University, St Louis) she contributes invaluable psychological insights which have proven essential to The Michael Projects strategies and training programs.  Regina, along with her husband Nyasha, are also foster parents.

There is a 17 member staff complement in the Michael Project, including administrators, pre-school teachers and house parents, who lovingly care for the children in our various initiatives.

As The Michael Project we are also advocating on behalf of orphaned and vulnerable children and partner with the Zimbabwean Government's Department of Child Welfare and Probation Services to promote adoption and foster care as a solution to the 1.6 million orphans in Zimbabwe.
