Shalom is registered with the Department of Social Development and has the capacity to care for up to twenty-four children. Family units, headed by house mothers, have been set up to ensure that a loving, Christian-focused family environment is provided for each child. The children attend local schools, and we endeavour to place those with special needs in academic institutions best suited to them. We assist the Department of Social Development with family tracing efforts for any of the children with traceable family ties. Our goal is to minimise the unnecessary institutionalisation of the children, in the hope that they are reunified with their families of origin as soon and safely as possible.
For the children without known families of origin, we engage with interested individuals and families to consider fostering or adoption. This provides a way for children to transition into, and therefore regain a family. We provide ongoing support for children who transition out of Shalom through assisting with school related and/or medical expenses when needed.
